Managing and Promoting Coventry's City Centre ~ Greening
Britain in Bloom has grown into the largest annual horticultural campaign in Europe. Every year, hundreds of communities across the UK from tiny rural villages to the largest cities, work together to combine horticultural skill and huge enthusiasm to achieve one common aim: to regenerate their local environments, by the use of imaginative planting and landscaping, and by dealing with local environmental issues, such as litter, graffiti and vandalism.
The
Coventry in
Bloom campaign involves many hundreds of people in the
local community all helping to make their local environment a cleaner,
greener place for the longer term.
Coventry City Centre has been involved in Britain in Bloom since 2002
and has achieved tremendous success, having acquired gold status in the
regional competition in 2003 and nominated for the nationals in 2004,
where the city received a prestigious Silver Gilt Award and won the best
in category. In 2005 it again won Gold in its class regionally and won
representation to the
national competition in 2006, where the city took silver in the urban
regeneration
category.
Coventry's colourful flowerbeds and open spaces are important in leaving a positive, lasting impression to the many visitors to the city and provide daily enjoyment to businesses and multi-cultural residents.
Both bedding plants and seasonal container planting are chosen to provide year round colour and interest; to complement the city's permanent landscaping and sustainable planting areas; and to enhance buildings and hard landscaped areas, particularly within the city centre.
Careful planning of the popular summer displays begins early in the
year to ensure that the plants are blooming and that everything is in
place for the summer season. Displays include :
• 230 square precinct planters
• 488 barrels
• 275 baskets
• 73 troughs
• 120 barrier troughs
• 50, 200 bedding plants
• 210 lamp post wrap-around baskets
• 300 barrier planters
